The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is pleased to have named its centralized laboratory building as the Run Run Shaw Science Building. The naming ceremony held on 4 July 2011 was officiated by Dr. Vincent H.C. Cheng, Chairman of the University Council, and Professor Joseph J.Y. Sung, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK. The building is named after Dr. the Honourable Run Run Shaw in recognition of his staunch support of and wise counsel to CUHK over the years. The University also thanked Mrs. Mona Shaw, Chairman of The Shaw Foundation Hong Kong Limited, for gracing the naming ceremony with her presence.

Dr. Shaw’s long association with CUHK began over four decades ago when he became a member of the Board of Trustees of United College in 1967. Since that time, the various generous donations from Dr. Shaw to the University have made possible many projects, particularly the creation of the fourth College—Shaw College—with a donation of HK$110 million in 1986, at that time the largest single private contribution to an educational institution in Hong Kong history. He also endowed a large auditorium and an academic building. Dr. Shaw and The Shaw Foundation Hong Kong Limited made a magnanimous donation of shares of Television Broadcasts Limited of about HK$100 million in value to CUHK in support of the University’s development, as well as scholarships and bursaries for the students of Shaw College in April this year.

As the CUHK comes to its Golden Jubilee Anniversary, Joseph J.Y. Sung expressed his deepest appreciation to Dr. Shaw for his unfailing support to CUHK’s development over the years, and praised Dr. Shaw for his support to education and research and for his loving care for students.

Located on a hillside on the central campus of CUHK, the Run Run Shaw Science Building is housing over 70 world-class laboratories for the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Medicine, including their School of Life Sciences and School of Biomedical Sciences. It is the first building in Hong Kong with an original design that caters for scientific experimental needs in a manner that complies with the strictest international standards. Now a landmark of the University, the building has boosted the University’s research strengths by providing state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities for various scientific research areas, including green catalysis, nanomaterials, transgenic cells, medicinal chemistry, plant science, blood pressure, diabetic embryopathy and prostate cancer.

The CUHK continue to strive for academic and research excellence, to further contribute to the betterment of mankind with the supports of donors and friends in the future.
 

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) owes much of its success to the support of benefactors over the past decades and is earnestly seeking to foster closer relationship with alumni, patrons and friends of CUHK in Canada. CUHK was recognized as a prescribed foreign university under section 3503 of the Canadian Income Tax Regulations and was added according to Schedule VIII of the Regulations by Order-in-Council P.C. 2010-551. With official receipts issued by CUHK, donation made by Canadian donors can be claimed against the taxable income according to subparagraph 110.1(1)(a)(vi) and paragraph 118.1(1)(f) of the Canadian Income Tax Act.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has received a generous donation of HK$10 million from Mr. Baldwin Cheng in support of the development of its 'General Education Foundation Programme'. To commemorate Cheng's contribution, the Research Centre for General Education in CUHK is now renamed the Baldwin Cheng Research Centre for General Education. The donation presentation ceremony cum opening ceremony of the Baldwin Cheng Research Centre for General Education was held on 25 March 2011. Officiating guests included Mrs. Cheng Ying-yim, Dr. Edwin Cheng, Mr. Baldwin Cheng, Professor Ambrose King, Emeritus Professor of Sociology and former Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, Professor Joseph J.Y. Sung, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, and Professor Cheung Chan-fai, Director of University General Education and Director of the Baldwin Cheng Research Centre for General Education. Professor Ambrose King delivered a keynote speech on the value of reading classics and the importance of humanity education at the ceremony.

The Cheng family has been a staunch supporter of the development of general education and humanity education at CUHK. Under the patronage of Mr. Baldwin Cheng's father, Mr. Cheng Ying-yim, and his brother, Dr. Edwin Cheng, a research fund on general education and philosophy research was established in 2005 to support CUHK's philosophy and cultural development. Over the years, the centre has embarked on various research projects and facilitated meaningful exchange on general education on local, regional and international levels. The results have been most promising.

Mr. Baldwin Cheng, a graduate of CUHK's M.A. in Philosophy programme in 2007, believes that CUHK has an excellent humanistic tradition and that humanistic education is the soul of university education. He remarked that it was Vice-Chancellor Professor Sung's emphasis on general education and humanity that encouraged him to support this education ideal. He said, 'CUHK has a long and noble history in general education. Its achievement is well recognized. I hope the donation will inspire and motivate more support from the public for the development of general education and the humanities.'

Professor Sung expressed his deepest gratitude to Mr. Cheng and his family. He said, 'The generous donation from the Cheng family is an affirmation of CUHK’s humanistic and general education tradition. Through the reading of classics and small-class seminar discussions, the General Education Foundation Programme supported by Mr. Baldwin Cheng engages students in dialogues on important value issues. Mr. Cheng's endowment shows that our ideal of whole-person education has the support of the public.'
