The Sports for Hope Foundation (SFHF) generously donated HK$1.3 million to the University to launch the 'Sports for Hope Foundation - CUHK Elite Athletes Scheme'. The goal of the scheme is to support needy athletes in CUHK by providing scholarships, sponsoring the training of sports teams, and strengthening leadership skills of captains in terms of confidence, sense of responsibility and communication skills. The cheque presentation and agreement signing ceremony held on 4 June 2012 was officiated by Ms. Marie-Christine Lee, founder and chairman of SFHF; and Professor Henry N.C. Wong, CUHK Pro-Vice-Chancellor.

Over 50 guests and elite student athletes joined the ceremony. Professor Wong expressed his deepest appreciation to Ms. Lee and the guests from SFHF for gracing the ceremony with their presence. Professor Wong also thanked Ms. Lee for her generous support to the University and the development of sports.

Ms. Lee's affection for sports has developed when she was a child. She said, 'Sports is vital to all-round development of undergraduate students. The scheme is to help needy athletes to take part in sports activities, so they can benefit from the process.'

The scheme is implemented by the Physical Education Unit of the University to support elite student athletes of the University by provision of scholarship, sports team training and sports leadership training starting from 2012-13. Application details will be announced later.
