The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is honoured to receive ten oil paintings from renowned artist Mr. Chen Keng.  In appreciation of his generosity, a donation ceremony was held at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall of CUHK on 4 August 2016.  These paintings, depicting the beautiful scenery of CUHK, will be permanently displayed at the University Health Centre of CUHK.

Officiated at the donation ceremony were Mr. and Mrs. Chen Keng, Prof. Fok Tai-fai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President of CUHK, and Dr. Scotty Luk, Director of University Health Service (UHS) of CUHK.

Prof. Fok Tai-fai said in his welcoming address, ‘I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Mr. Chen for his generosity in donating his beautiful artworks to the Chinese University.  We are truly grateful for the support and trust Mr. and Mrs. Chen have rendered to CUHK.’

In his speech, Mr. Chen Keng thanked his parents for providing him with abundant opportunities to learn about art since he was a boy, and shared with the audience his journey of art creation at CUHK.  ‘Since I started residing on the campus of CUHK some years ago, I am fascinated by the stunning environment of the University.  The ten paintings, which I donated to CUHK, depict the splendid scenery of the campus.  I am pleased to learn that they will be permanently displayed at the University Health Centre,’ he said.

Dr. Scotty Luk said in his speech, ‘We strongly believed that, with these brilliant artworks displayed at the University Health Centre, the ambience of Centre can be greatly enhanced.  Patients’ stress level can also be reduced through appreciating Mr. Chen’s paintings.’

As an acclaimed oil painting artist, Mr. Chen Keng is dedicated to promoting the development of the art in Hong Kong and mainland China.  Apart from founding the Guangzhou Young Artists’ Association and the Guangdong Young Artists’ Association, he has been actively participating in various artists’ associations.  In celebration of the Golden Jubilee of CUHK, the Office of the Arts Administrator of CUHK organized an exhibition, entitled ‘Images of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Oil Painting Exhibition by Chen Keng’, showcasing over twenty paintings of Mr. Chen at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall in 2013.

The third Presentation Ceremony of ‘Sin Wai Kin CUHK Golden Jubilee Scholarships in Arts, History and Philosophy’ was held on 20 July 2016 at the Chung Chi College Staff Club of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). 15 students from the Faculty of Arts with outstanding academic performance received this prestigious award.                                              

Officiated at the Ceremony were Dr Sin Wai-kin, David, Chairman of Sin Wai Kin Foundation and Myer Jewelry Manufacturer Limited, Mrs Sin, Mr Sin Nga-yan, Benedict, Director and General Manager of Myer Jewelry Manufacturer Limited, Professor Fok Tai-fai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President of CUHK, and Professor Leung Yuen-sang, Dean of Faculty of Arts of CUHK.

In his welcoming speech, Professor Fok Tai-fai expressed his sincere gratitude towards Dr Sin and his family for their long-standing support towards the University. He encouraged the scholarship recipients to learn from Dr Sin as a role model of integrity and benevolence. Mr Benedict Sin urged the scholarship recipients to continue to strive for excellence by breaking through obstacles, and dedicate themselves in serving the community in the future.   

Mr Siu Sai-yau, a PhD student from the Department of Translation, delivered a vote of thanks on behalf of all recipients. In appreciation of the generosity of the Sin family, Professor Leung and the scholarship recipients presented souvenirs and thank you cards to Dr Sin and his family at the end of the ceremony.

The ‘Sin Wai Kin CUHK Golden Jubilee Scholarships in Arts, History and Philosophy’ was established in 2013 in the midst of the 50^th anniversary of the Chinese University, with the objective of awarding students who excel in Arts, History and Philosophy, and fostering academic research.  

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is honoured to receive a generous donation of HK$1 million from the Tsz Shan Monastery in support of the ‘Ashoka Tree’ Youth Personal Growth Programme established by the Department of Psychology, with the objective of improving the mental wellness of youth through learning Buddhist theories and practicing ‘Chanwuyi’ (‘Chan’ means enlightenment; ‘Wu’ means Kung fu; ‘Yi’ means healing).  A donation ceremony was held recently, officiated by Venerable Thong Hong, Abbot of Tsz Shan Monastery and Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK.  Prof. Fanny Cheung, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, as well as distinguished guests from the Tsz Shan Monastery, also joined the ceremony.  Prof. Agnes Chan, Director of the Chanwuyi Research Center for Neuropsychological Well-Being, Department of Psychology, introduced to the guests details of the ‘Ashoka Tree’ Youth Personal Growth Programme.

In April 2016, Tsz Shan Monastery and CUHK jointly organized a two-day ‘Zen Meditation Training Programme’ with the participation of more than 130 university students and members of staff.  Carrying on the success of the programme, the ‘Ashoka Tree’ Youth Personal Growth Programme will be launched with an aim to promote mental and physical well-being of youth aged 7 to 23 through learning Buddhist theories and practicing Chanwuyi.  Selected participants will start a nine-month training in October. 

Prof. Joseph Sung said in his welcoming address, ‘I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Venerable Thong Hong and the Tsz Shan Monastery for their generosity in support of our endeavours in promoting mental health and research in neuropsychology.  It is believed that the “Ashoka Tree” Youth Personal Growth Programme will help students achieve a peaceful mind by practicing Chanwuyi.  It can also help reduce their stress level and enhance their learning capacity.’ 

In his speech, Venerable Thong Hong highlighted the importance of promoting all-round development of youth, a vision shared by both the Tsz Shan Monastery and CUHK.  ‘Through practicing Chanwuyi, students will be able to develop a peaceful mind in the face of challenges.  It will also help them cultivate virtues and find happiness in life,’ he said.
