The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) organized the "Walk with Professor Kao" CUHK Walkathon on 14 March to raise funds for the Charles K. Kao Scholarship Endowment Fund and an online training programme for family caregivers of people with cognitive loss. Close to 3,000 walkers, comprising current students, staff, alumni, Council members, friends of CUHK and the public, came in support of the causes. The kick-off ceremony was officiated by Professor and Mrs. Charles Kao; Dr. Vincent Cheng, CUHK Council Chairman; Professor Lawrence J. Lau, CUHK Vice-Chancellor; Professor Ma Lin and Professor Ambrose King, former CUHK Vice-Chancellors; and Mr. Lau Sai-yung, Chairman of the CUHK Convocation. The event raised HK$4 million and helped to heighten awareness of the importance of research and innovation, and care for the community.

Alumni, staff, students and friends of CUHK, along with corporations, primary, secondary, and even kindergarten school students and their parents responded enthusiastically by forming teams of their affiliation to support the event. They carried with them colourful banners to the kick-off ceremony to show their support and pay tribute to Professor Kao. Among them were the Colleges and Faculties of the University, as well as a number of teams from sponsors. Close to 20 teams competed for awards to encourage the most number of participants from Colleges and the best fundraiser as a team or an individual.

Walkers started from the Lingnan Stadium of Chung Chi College and ended at the University Mall. Some took the longer route of 90 minutes while others enjoyed a shorter 45-minute route. All walkers got to enjoy scenic views of the Tolo Harbour, Pat Sin Leng and the beautiful bloom of azaleas on the way to the finish line. After the walk, participants also visited the exhibition in the University Library where Professor Kao’s Nobel Prize Medal and Diploma along with his other precious awards are on display.

The Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony of Lee Woo Sing College, one of the five new Colleges of CUHK, was held on 25 January 2010, kicking off the construction of the College. The ceremony was officiated by The Honourable Tsang Tak-sing, Secretary for Home Affairs; Professor Zhang Junsheng, Chairman of the Development Committee of Zhe Jiang University; Mr. Yao Eng-chi, Chairman of Pao-Sang Education Foundation and President of The Cross-Strait Hakka Cultural and Economic Exchange Association; Dr. Alice Piera Lam Lee Kiu-yue; Mr. Lee Woo-sing; Dr. Li Wo-hing, Founder of Lee Woo Sing College; Professor Lawrence J. Lau, Vice-Chancellor, CUHK; and Professor Joseph W.Y. Lau, Founding Master of Lee Woo Sing College. Over a hundred members of the University and supporters of the College attended the ceremony, including the existing and ex-Trustees of Shaw College and committee members of the Shanghai Fraternity Association of Hong Kong.
 

Lee Woo Sing College was established in 2007 with the generous support of Dr. Li Wo-hing, the College Founder, and his family. It is named after Dr. Li’s brother, Mr. Lee Woo-sing in honour of Mr. Lee’s long-term commitment to the advancement of education, and his selfless public services. ‘The ultimate goal of education is to enhance the quality of the human race.’ Dr. Li stresses that, ‘At Lee Woo Sing College, we aim at nurturing leaders for Hong Kong, the Mainland and the world.’

Mr. Lee Woo-sing has high expectations of Lee Woo Sing College. He wishes that students of Lee Woo Sing College will be encouraged to serve the community and the country; to achieve ‘harmony’, the College’s motto in their dealings with the world; to treat others with moderation; to be objective in their analyses and receptive of different opinions in their approach to problems.

'The establishment of Lee Woo Sing College at CUHK by Dr. Li Wo-hing and his family is a perfect manifestation of the traditional Chinese virtue of fraternity.' says CUHK Vice-Chancellor Professor Lawrence J. Lau at the ceremony. He sincerely hopes that Lee Woo Sing College will create a caring and congenial environment for nurturing the young and fostering their development.

Located on Residence Road in the valley, Lee Woo Sing College can accommodate 600 residential students and in addition up to 600 non-residential students. It is expected to admit its first cohort of students in the 2011-2012 academic year. ‘By joining the activities and experiencing non-formal education organized by the colleges, students can learn from each other through mutual discussions and broaden their perspectives. The general education offered by the colleges will also help students develop their communication and leadership skills, and teach them the proper ways of conducting themselves in society,’ says Professor Joseph W.Y. Lau, Founding Master of Lee Woo Sing College.

To cater for the increased student enrolment of 3,000 upon the reversion to a four-year curriculum in 2012, CUHK established five new colleges with the generous support of benefactors, to maintain its quality of education. In conjunction with the existing four Colleges, the five new Colleges will provide a spectrum of choice for undergraduate students.
 

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is grateful to the HK & Macau Taiwanese Charity Fund Limited for a generous donation of HK$500,000 towards establishing studentships in our University. The studentships, known as HK & Macau Taiwanese Charity Fund Ltd. Angel Care Studentships, will support the needy undergraduate students of CUHK starting from 2009-10 academic year. It is hoped that, with the assistance of the Studentships, students in genuine and urgent needs can concentrate on their studies and in time they will be our future leaders and great contributors of our society.
