'Dreams Come True' Video Transcript

Narrator:
A decade to grow a tree; a century to educate a person. CUHK has been realizing its mission to educate people in this peaceful hillside for over half a century. With the staunch support from community leaders, friends and alumni, CUHK is now a foremost research and education hub. In addition, the University is a cradle for realizing the dreams of our faculty members and students.

Subtitle: Research // For the Betterment of Society

Narrator:
CUHK set up the first Graduate School in Hong Kong, with the objective to achieve excellence in research and initiate pioneering research projects for the benefits of the society. Today, over 100 research institutes, centres and units have been established at CUHK.

Professor Rossa Chiu Wai Kwun:
My research focus is non-invasive prenatal diagnosis. After many years of in-depth research and studies, we have successfully invented new ways to accurately examine such minute quantity of fetal DNA in maternal blood. Through this new invention, we can now diagnose whether foetuses have Down’s Syndrome before birth. The accuracy rate of the test is 99%. Nowadays, over 60 countries have adopted the test as one of the prenatal checks for Down’s Syndrome.

Recently, we have achieved another breakthrough, in which we are able to analyze the entire genetic map of foetuses through the test. From diagnosing Down’s Syndrome to analyzing the genetic map, a huge amount of laboratory works have been done. Simply conducting the DNA test will take me 100 weeks. In other words, it will take me two years to finish analyzing one complete sample.

We are fortunate to have a philanthropist at that time, who generously donated this extra genetic sequencing machine, which costs HK$7 million to our laboratory. In this connection, we could substantially reduce the time spent on analyzing samples. As a result, we are the first team in the world to publicize a method to conduct fetal DNA maps by using maternal blood.

My ultimate goal is to develop a technology which can keep track of the growth and health status of foetuses, not limited to identifying hereditary diseases.

Subtitle: Education // In Search of Humanistic Spirits

Narrator:
Outstanding students are valuable resources of a university, as well as future pillars of the society. Each year, thousands of freshmen arrived at CUHK to pursue their dreams.

Susane Wong Yui Hin:
The Department of Chinese Language and Literature of the CUHK has a long history. The Department is committed to promoting Chinese Classics and culture. I share the Department’s vision to inherit our tradition and culture, and promote it to society and the world. In addition to my core courses, I have also enrolled in courses offered by other Departments of the Faculty of Arts. I indeed learned a lot by taking these courses, and I am excited to acquire new knowledge that I have never heard of. Every time I attended lecture, I found what the professors taught very enlightening. I am always able to learn something new. In fact, my dream is to become a teacher one day. From my perspective, the role of a teacher is far more than imparting knowledge to the students. Good teachers are willing to share with students their values of life, as well as their valuable experiences and viewpoints towards various issues. The impact of education is indeed enormous.

Subtitle: Benevolence // Always be Thankful

Narrator:
Making dreams come true is a common wish without borders. CUHK promotes internationalization and embraces cultural diversity. The University has been promoting intellectual exchanges between students from all around the world, so as to broaden their horizons.15 years ago, 28 mainland students were enrolled in CUHK in 1998.They were the first batch of undergraduates from mainland China admitted by local universities. Over the years, more and more students from mainland China were admitted to CUHK. Over 2,500 alumni have fulfilled their university dreams.

Xu Ziheng:
I have been working in this company for four years since October 2010. In the past four years,I donated 10% of my annual income to CUHK for the enrichment of scholarships, By doing so, I hope I can contribute to my alma mater. The reason for making such a donation is because I was greatly influenced by my benefactor. In fact, the most touching moment was not the time when I was informed about the scholarship, but the moment I met with the donor. I wish I can be someone like him one day make use of my strength to help people in need. Therefore, when I entered the society years ago, I started to give back to my alma mater on a regular basis. By enriching the scholarship programme, I hope more young people would pursue their dreams at CUHK. In the process of realizing their dreams, I wish they can concentrate on their studies without financial burden. I also hope that these scholarship recipients can carry on such giving culture and contribute back to CUHK one day. This is my dream.

Subtitle: Give // Making a Difference

Narrator:
The growth of CUHK is made possible by the generous donations from many benefactors.
Since its inception, CUHK has received tremendous support from numerous community leaders, alumni and friends for nurturing bright talents for the society.

Dr Alex K. Yasumoto:
He (my father) said that if you can earn the money (in Hong Kong), don't think about bringing it back to Japan. You should spend, invest or donate in that place. Young people go abroad can experience many new things which is different from their own country. They get the experience from cultural differences, and learn from another perspective. That is why it is good to have an exchange scheme. CUHK concerns about internationalization, so it meets my purpose of giving very much. That is why I donated to CUHK. I was surprised that many students enjoyed this scheme. I am very appreciative about this. Fifty years is a very long time. Even ten years, we cannot predict the future. But I wish CUHK will get into the best 10 universities in the world in the next fifty years.

Narrator:
Since the inception of CUHK, the University has grown from strength to strength through the support and joint efforts of our benefactors, alumni, faculty members, staff and students. In this peaceful and beautiful campus, many outstanding researchers and students strive hard to fulfil their dreams. CUHK provides an ideal platform for our researchers and students to pursue their dream, while our benefactors provide them with unfailing care and support throughout the journey. With the concerted efforts of the University and our benefactors, their dreams come true. The long-term impact of philanthropy is always beyond our imagination.
