The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has established the CUHK Centre for Buddhist Studies with the help of generous donations from Dr and Mrs Kong Ho-pak and GS Charity Foundation. The Centre aims to promote high-quality Buddhist studies and enhance public understanding of Buddhism through education. Dr and Mrs Kong donated HK$10 million to establish the “Sarina and Ho Pak Kong Professorship in Buddhist Studies”, while GS Charity Foundation donated HK$20 million to partially fund the Centre. The donation ceremony was held today (30 October), during which President of The Hong Kong Buddhist Association Ven. Kuan Yun, representing Dr and Mrs Kong, and Chairman of GS Charity Foundation Dr Charles Yeung presented cheques to CUHK, which were received by CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rocky S. Tuan.

Professor Tuan expressed his gratitude to Dr and Mrs Kong and GS Charity Foundation, adding that Buddhism has a long, rich history and is an indispensable part of traditional Chinese culture. He stated that CUHK has always embraced the mission “to combine tradition with modernity; to bring together China and the West”, viewing the inheritance of Chinese culture as its responsibility, especially within the humanities. He said CUHK is honoured to have the trust and support of Dr and Mrs Kong, as well as GS Charity Foundation, in establishing the ‘Sarina and Ho Pak Kong Professorship in Buddhist Studies’ and the CUHK Centre for Buddhist Studies, supporting the University in promoting Buddhist education and nurturing talent.

Ven. Kuan Yun stated that the establishment of the Centre can advance the development of Buddhist studies, and that he appreciated CUHK’s ability to integrate Eastern and Western cultures, actively promoting Buddhism and education in the subject. Ven. Kuan Yun said he hoped that the CUHK Centre of Buddhist Studies will thrive and yield fruitful academic results, making great strides forward in Buddhism research.

Dr Yeung stated that GS Charity Foundation has long been dedicated to promoting Buddhist education. Years ago, it established Hong Kong’s first postgraduate programme in Buddhist Studies. He said it was a privilege this time to join Dr Kong in supporting CUHK as it establishes the CUHK Centre for Buddhist Studies. He added that he appreciated CUHK’s solid foundation in the subject, coupled with a distinguished international reputation and extensive collaborative networks. He wished the CUHK Centre for Buddhist Studies a successful launch and said he believed it will nurture even more outstanding talent in Buddhist studies in the future.

The “Sarina and Ho Pak Kong Professorship in Buddhist Studies” is the first endowed professorship in the field of cultural and religious studies at CUHK, so it has profound significance. The appointee to this professorship will lead the CUHK Centre for Buddhist Studies and its academic team to promote Buddhist education, nurture talent and explore new realms in Buddhist studies. The Centre will introduce relevant postgraduate programmes, host lectures on Buddhist culture and organise academic conferences to expand scholarly research, delve into the truths of Buddhism from various perspectives, strengthen educational functions and guide hearts towards goodness.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) organized the Presentation Ceremony of ‘Sin Wai Kin CUHK Golden Jubilee Scholarships in Arts, History and Philosophy’ and luncheon on Monday, 7 October 2024. The event was graced by the presence of  Mr. Sin Nga-yan, Benedict, the representative of Dr. Sin Wai-kin and the Director and General Manager of Myer Jewelry Manufacturer Limited, Dr. Pang Yuk-wing, Joseph, Convenor of CUHK 50^th Anniversary Fund Raising Committee, Mr. Heung Shu-fai, Louis, Trustee of New Asia College of CUHK, Professor Chan Tak-cheung, Anthony, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President of CUHK, Professor Mok Pik-ki, Peggy, Associate Dean of Arts (Student Affairs) of CUHK, Professor Wong Ka-chat, Andy, Director of Admissions and Financial Aid of CUHK, and Ms. Wong Shuk-fan, Lolitta, Director of Institutional Advancement of CUHK.

In the welcoming speech, Professor Anthony Chan thanked Dr. Sin and his family for their unwavering support rendered to CUHK in various academic programs for promoting Chinese culture. Mr. Benedict Sin encouraged all scholarship recipients to actively discover new things, and endeavor to contribute to the development in Hong Kong and China. Lee Ching-nga, a year three student from the Department of History represented all scholarship recipients to express their gratitude to Dr. Sin for his generosity in setting up this meaningful award which relieved their financial burden and encouraged them to broaden their horizons. The recipients had a meaningful exchange session with honorable guests and shared their insights in future plans with the guests during the post-ceremonial luncheon.

Aiming to foster academic research, the ‘Sin Wai Kin CUHK Golden Jubilee Scholarships in Arts, History and Philosophy’ was established in 2013 by Dr. Sin Wai-kin in the midst of the 50^th anniversary of CUHK to award outstanding students majoring in Arts, History and Philosophy. 

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) organized the “Shanghai Fraternity Association Diligence Bursaries Recipients Gathering” on Wednesday, 6 August 2024. Mr. Jimmy Jim, Vice-President of Shanghai Fraternity Association Hong Kong Limited (SFA), Professor Anthony Chan Tak-cheung, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President of CUHK and honorable guests of SFA and over forty recipients of Shanghai Fraternity Association Diligence Bursaries attended this delightful event.

In his welcoming address, Professor Anthony Chan extended his heartfelt gratitude for the unwavering support received from the Association over the years. The Association always provides the students with different opportunities. Professor Anthony Chan encouraged the recipients to equip themselves with valuable skills and serve our community in the future. “I hope all the recipients will make the most out of your four years in the University and make the best use of “Shanghai Fraternity Association Diligence Bursaries” to help yourselves to gain knowledge and skills, and get prepared to contribute to our community upon graduation.” Li Hey-way gave a vote of thanks on behalf of all recipients. She expressed earnest thanks to SFA for their financial support. Diligence Bursaries alleviate financial burden of the recipients, encouraging them to pursue their dreams.

CUHK graduated Mr. Roy Tsang and Ms. Christy Liang, who received Shanghai Fraternity Association Diligence Bursaries during their undergraduate journey, were invited to the gathering this year. They both shared their insights in career planning and discuss how the bursaries had impacted their life positively in the sharing session in which the recipients were inspired to chart their own path.

Shanghai Fraternity Association made a donation to CUHK for the establishment of the Shanghai Fraternity Association Diligence Bursaries in 2017. The program provides financial support to 125 undergraduate students with financial needs at CUHK, including 35 students from Lee Woo Sing College. The program aims at alleviating the financial burden on students, enabling them to concentrate on their academic pursuits and personal development.
