A total of 61 students were awarded the Lee Quo Wei CUHK Golden Jubilee Scholarship this year in recognition of their excellent academic performance.

The presentation ceremony, held on 28 November at Cho Yiu Hall, was officiated by Mr Thomas Liang, Chief Executive of the Wei Lun Foundation and Professor Anthony Chan Tak-cheung, CUHK’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Alumni Relations & Advancement).

In his welcoming address, Professor Chan expressed gratitude to the Wei Lun Foundation for its unwavering support and commitment to the University over the years. He remarked that since its inception, the Lee Quo Wei CUHK Golden Jubilee Scholarship has empowered over 600 CUHK students in the pursuit of their academic dreams. While taking pride in the young scholars, he reminded them that true success extended beyond accolades and accomplishments – it was bringing positive changes to communities and individuals that mattered.

On behalf of all awardees, Suyasha Mohan Narasipuram, a third-year medical student, thanked the foundation for establishing a scholarship that not only provided financial support but also served as a catalyst for CUHK students’ personal growth and development. She described the scholarship as a beacon of motivation that encouraged recipients to seize opportunities available without hesitation. The scholarship, she noted, symbolised the foundation’s enduring dedication to advancing globalisation and education.

The Lee Quo Wei CUHK Golden Jubilee Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 2013 to award medical students, law students and students from mainland China with excellent academic achievements, and support the students with financial needs for exchange programmes.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) recently held a naming ceremony for the Robert Dan Health Education Centre, in honour of Dr Robert Dan Bing-kwan, the Founding Director of the University Health Service (now known as the University Medical Service Office). The Centre has been named to express gratitude to Dr Dan and his wife, Mrs Sophia Dan Yang Wing-man, for their generous donations supporting the University’s provision of high-quality health education and medical services, and in recognition of Dr Dan’s exceptional contributions to foster a healthy campus environment at CUHK, ensuring better health protection for the University community.

The naming ceremony was jointly officiated by Professor Rocky S. Tuan, CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President; Mrs Carrie Lam, former Chief Executive of the Hong Kong government; Dr Dan and his wife. In his address, Professor Tuan said that Dr Dan has always wholeheartedly dedicated himself to the development of CUHK. During his tenure, Dr Dan led the team in creating a comprehensive healthcare service plan, laying a robust foundation for the University’s healthcare services. Professor Tuan further said that even after retirement, Dr and Mrs Dan have continued to support the University, with their generous donations greatly contributing to the development of the CUHK Health Education Centre, and the promotion and expansion of diverse healthcare service programmes. He expressed the CUHK community’s deep appreciation of the couple’s invaluable contributions.

Mrs Lam said that Dr Dan and Mrs Dan are philanthropists, having made generous donations to numerous higher education institutions in mainland China and Hong Kong over the years. They have wholeheartedly contributed to the development of education in both regions. She also expressed her belief that staying healthy is based on the principle that “prevention is better than cure”, empahsising Robert Dan Health Education Centre plays a vital role in safeguarding the physical and mental well-being of staff and students, which is of great benefit to the University’s development. She added that she hopes the Centre will continue to strive for excellence, providing more comprehensive and high-quality health services for CUHK community.

Professor Anthony T.C. Chan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Alumni Relations and Advancement) of CUHK, commended Dr and Mrs Dan for their enduring passion for education and philanthropy, as well as their steadfast support for CUHK. In particular, he highlighted their significant role in the long-term development of medical research and health education at the University. In 2020, Mrs Dan generously donated to support the academic research of CUHK’s Neurology Division. Now, with their support of Dr and Mrs Dan, the CUHK Health Education Centre can further expand its services. Professor Chan extended his heartfelt gratitude to Dr and Mrs Dan for their support.

About the CUHK Robert Dan Health Education Centre

The CUHK Robert Dan Health Education Centre is located within the University Health Centre on the CUHK campus. Aiming to promote a healthy lifestyle, it features multipurpose activity rooms, consultation rooms and offices, providing health knowledge and a variety of health seminars and courses for students and staff, including workshops on mental health, first aid courses and vaccination activities.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has established the CUHK Centre for Buddhist Studies with the help of generous donations from Dr and Mrs Kong Ho-pak and GS Charity Foundation. The Centre aims to promote high-quality Buddhist studies and enhance public understanding of Buddhism through education. Dr and Mrs Kong donated HK$10 million to establish the “Sarina and Ho Pak Kong Professorship in Buddhist Studies”, while GS Charity Foundation donated HK$20 million to partially fund the Centre. The donation ceremony was held today (30 October), during which President of The Hong Kong Buddhist Association Ven. Kuan Yun, representing Dr and Mrs Kong, and Chairman of GS Charity Foundation Dr Charles Yeung presented cheques to CUHK, which were received by CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rocky S. Tuan.

Professor Tuan expressed his gratitude to Dr and Mrs Kong and GS Charity Foundation, adding that Buddhism has a long, rich history and is an indispensable part of traditional Chinese culture. He stated that CUHK has always embraced the mission “to combine tradition with modernity; to bring together China and the West”, viewing the inheritance of Chinese culture as its responsibility, especially within the humanities. He said CUHK is honoured to have the trust and support of Dr and Mrs Kong, as well as GS Charity Foundation, in establishing the ‘Sarina and Ho Pak Kong Professorship in Buddhist Studies’ and the CUHK Centre for Buddhist Studies, supporting the University in promoting Buddhist education and nurturing talent.

Ven. Kuan Yun stated that the establishment of the Centre can advance the development of Buddhist studies, and that he appreciated CUHK’s ability to integrate Eastern and Western cultures, actively promoting Buddhism and education in the subject. Ven. Kuan Yun said he hoped that the CUHK Centre of Buddhist Studies will thrive and yield fruitful academic results, making great strides forward in Buddhism research.

Dr Yeung stated that GS Charity Foundation has long been dedicated to promoting Buddhist education. Years ago, it established Hong Kong’s first postgraduate programme in Buddhist Studies. He said it was a privilege this time to join Dr Kong in supporting CUHK as it establishes the CUHK Centre for Buddhist Studies. He added that he appreciated CUHK’s solid foundation in the subject, coupled with a distinguished international reputation and extensive collaborative networks. He wished the CUHK Centre for Buddhist Studies a successful launch and said he believed it will nurture even more outstanding talent in Buddhist studies in the future.

The “Sarina and Ho Pak Kong Professorship in Buddhist Studies” is the first endowed professorship in the field of cultural and religious studies at CUHK, so it has profound significance. The appointee to this professorship will lead the CUHK Centre for Buddhist Studies and its academic team to promote Buddhist education, nurture talent and explore new realms in Buddhist studies. The Centre will introduce relevant postgraduate programmes, host lectures on Buddhist culture and organise academic conferences to expand scholarly research, delve into the truths of Buddhism from various perspectives, strengthen educational functions and guide hearts towards goodness.
