Garden Party of the Friends of the Art Museum held at the Vice-Chancellor’s Lodge

The Garden Party of the Friends of the Art Museum (the Friends) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) was held on 10 December 2022 at the Vice-Chancellor’s Lodge of CUHK. Members of the Friends, as well as faculty members and students of the Department of Fine Arts of CUHK gathered on this special occasion and enjoyed a fruitful afternoon. The event was graced by the presence of Mr Edwin Mok, new Chair of the Friends; the host Professor Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and our special guests Mrs. Klara Jurcova, Consul General of the Czech Republic in Hong Kong and Ms. Anna Dupalova, Head of Economic and Commercial Section, The Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Hong Kong.

In his welcoming address, Professor Rocky Tuan expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the staunch support the University has received from Friends over the past decades. “I trusted that the scholarships and grants are not only meant as the financial support for the awardees, but more importantly, as a form of encouragement for them to pursue their dreams,” said Professor Tuan. “And we look forward to the continued partnership with the Friends to nurture future art talents who hold dreams in their heart.”

Mr Edwin Mok thanked Prof Tuan in his speech for opening up his lodge and thanked CUHK for all the arrangements. He promised that Friends will continue to support young artists with exceptional talents and passion in Fine Arts, and collaborate with CUHK and the art museum by organizing more art activities in 2023, including oversea tours, online seminars and lectures, contributing to the promotion and appreciation of Chinese art in the Hong Kong community.

This year, 11 students have been selected to receive these prestigious awards. To express their gratitude to the Friends, the awardee representative Cheung Chu Yin, Cyrus presented thank you letter to Mr Edwin Mok on behalf of all recipients. Another highlight of the event today is the fund-raising silent auction. The proceeds from the auction will go towards the CUHK 60th Anniversary University Development Fund in support of the advancement of the University and the Art Museum.

The Friends was founded in 1981 to promote the study and appreciation of Chinese art and culture. Over the years, the Friends committed to supporting art education by generously offering scholarships to outstanding Fine Arts students of CUHK.

Naming Ceremony of Wofoo Joseph Lee Lecture Theatre at CUHK

The Chinese University of Hong Kong hosted the naming ceremony of the Wofoo Joseph Lee Lecture Theatre (LT8) on 5^th December, 2022. The Ceremony was officiated by Dr Joseph Lee, the Chairman of the Wofoo Charity Foundation, Prof. Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, Prof. Anthony Chan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK and Mr. Ho Kai-ming, J.P, the Under Secretary for Labour and Welfare of HKSAR. The Naming Ceremony was also graced with the presence of family members and friends of Dr and Mrs Joseph Lee.

In appreciation of the staunch support of Wofoo Charity Foundation, in particular towards the development of CUHK and the research projects undertaken by the Nethersole Nursing School, the University named the Lecture Theatre 8 of the Yasumoto International Academic Park as “Wofoo Joseph Lee Lecture Theatre”.

In his speech, Prof. Rocky Tuan expressed his sincere gratitude to Dr. and Mrs. Lee for their support towards the University. “We are gratified to have Dr. Lee’s kind donation towards the University and benefit the people in need in our society. We look forward to a continuous partnership with Dr. Lee and Wofoo Charity Foundation in future.” said Prof. Rocky Tuan.

Dr. Lee is a philanthropist and a successful business leader. He is currently the Chairman of Wofoo Plastics and Chemicals Group and Wofoo Foundation, as well as the President of Wofoo Social Enterprises. He strives to address the needs of the community and cultivate social harmony (人和家富民和國富) as a social entrepreneur.

The Wofoo Joseph Lee Lecture Theatre is located on the second floor of the Yasumoto International Academic Park, one of our largest teaching facilities on campus. The Lecture Theatre 8 is equipped with comprehensive audio-visual facilities and Wi-Fi network connectivity for teaching and learning.

The Ninth Lee Quo Wei CUHK Golden Jubilee Scholarship Presentation Ceremony

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) organized the ninth “Lee Quo Wei CUHK Golden Jubilee Scholarship Presentation Ceremony” on Tuesday, 29 November 2022. The ceremony was officiated by Mr. Thomas Liang, Chief Executive of the Wei Lun Foundation, Miss Michelle Liang and Professor Anthony Chan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President of CUHK.

In his welcoming address, Professor Anthony Chan expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Lee Family and the Wei Lun Foundation for their unfailing support to CUHK over the years. He also congratulated and encouraged all the Scholars to not forget the beneficence and the philanthropic vision of the late Dr the Honourable Lee Quo-wei and the Wei Lun Foundation.

A total of 51 students have been awarded the “Lee Quo Wei CUHK Golden Jubilee Scholarship” this year. On behalf of all recipients, awardee representative Chung Kwun Hang, Henry conveyed his gratitude to the Wei Lun Foundation for supporting their dreams and providing them precious opportunities to gain insights into knowledge that is not taught in the classroom.

Celebrating the Golden Jubilee of CUHK in 2013, the “Lee Quo Wei CUHK Golden Jubilee Scholarship Endowment Fund” was established to award medical students, law students and Mainland students with excellent academic achievement, and also support the students with financial needs for the exchange programmes.
